Political News Publishing: Newsroom Setup & Editorial Workflow

About the Role We're building a political news publication from the ground up and need a Managing Editor to establish our editorial operations and lead our reporting team. You'll own the entire editorial workflow—from story assignment and fact-checking to publication and audience growth. This role requires someone who can build systems, coach reporters, and ensure every story meets rigorous accuracy standards while meeting the pace of breaking political news. Key Responsibilities - Build and manage the editorial workflow from assignment to publication, establishing newsroom standards and processes - Assign stories to reporters, manage coverage priorities across political beats, and coordinate deadline tracking - Oversee fact-checking protocols and ensure reporters verify all claims and sources before publication - Edit and provide substantive feedback on drafts, managing collaborative revision cycles with reporters - Optimize published stories for search and social distribution, working with headlines, metadata, and keyword targeting - Track story performance and audience engagement, using data to inform coverage decisions - Develop and manage a political newsletter strategy to build a direct subscriber base - Monitor media coverage and track how our reporting influences the broader political conversation Required Qualifications - 4-6 years of experience in political journalism or news editing - Proven track record managing editorial teams and coordinating multi-reporter coverage - Strong editing skills with attention to accuracy, sourcing, and journalistic standards - Experience with newsroom assignment systems and editorial workflow management - Understanding of SEO principles and content optimization for digital platforms - Familiarity with fact-checking methodologies and verification tools Preferred Qualifications - Experience launching or scaling a news publication or editorial vertical - Background in political reporting or campaign coverage - Knowledge of newsletter strategy and audience development - Comfort with editorial analytics and performance tracking Tools & Platforms Superdesk, Saga, Verifi, Perplexity, Notion, Grammarly, Surfer SEO, WordPress, Smartocto, Meltwater, Beehiiv, ConvertKit
